Lev Fedorovitch Sabakin
(1746 - 1813)
The eminent Russian mechanic, a superb connoisseur
of technical sciences of his times, who was awarded the order of
Saint Vladimir of the IV rate and bestowed the title of a nobleman
of a "collegiate assessor", the contemporary of Kulibin
and Voloskov, he constructed the most complicated astronomic pendulum
clock with a calendar.
Lev Sabakin came from the city of Staritza, he worked as the main
mechanic for the city of Tver Governor from 1776 up to 1784. Among
numerous inventions of him, he constructed astronomic wall clock.
Initially it was intended to be a cosmographic demonstrative device,
which could give "quite good knowledge of the most complex
spheres of Science". Created in 1774 the clock showed time
of sunrise and sunset, the Moon phases, planet movement.
Due to the clock Catherine the Great learned about Sabakin. Following
her order he left for England for further training in the field
of practical mechanics. There he was bestowed honors. Having returned
to Tver, he aimed at distributing the information on mechanics he
possessed all over Russia.

In 1788 there were published in Saint-Petersburg Sabakin’s
different works and translations, and besides he published his work
on mechanics "Lesser issue, or Talks, concerning astronomy,
physics and mechanics, based on the clear Proof and the Simplest
Experiments", where the basic knowledge of various academic
subjects got a very vivid and enjoyable coverage.
